IMO shields are not worth it as your skill points are better off being spent elsewhere. you can save yourself 10 skill points just by running an off hand weapon instead.
10 skill points to run a main hand weapon and off hand weapon vs 20 skill points for a main hand weapon and a shield. i know what i'd take.

I love shields, Chuck Norris doesn't get hit as hard when using a shield and I'd rather have the extra defense.
