Axes and slashing people?

Has anyone had any succes slashing with axes? I've tried it out on a low-level gladiator, but, even though the crowd doesn't laugh at him, nor does the enforcer peer quizzically at me, I've seen better results bashing with a 2h sword...

The damage my gladiator does while slashing with axes is sometimes less than half of what it is when he's set to bash, and that's against light armour, where slash should theoretically have a little bit of an advantage.
