What is the purpose of the Black market?

i see that there are point values beside the gladiator's current ranking for the day. What affect do these points have?

None, the only thing these points effect are the ranking for the day's fights in the pit.
The Black Market pit fights came about because people wanted to see how there gladiators stacked up against others minus there normal armor and weapons.

But these pit fights have proven to be very interesting.

The game is still evolving and I believe the pit fights are just one aspect of what is planned for the black market. I can't recall what the grand plans are but if you do some searching on the forums I think you'll find a thread or two on the subject.
