Dumping points into your weapon is critical! If you don't know how to use your weapon you're going to have a hard time winning even if you've got yourself a blue or purple weapon.
Personally, I like to get my weapon skill up to 4 or 5 before I start training in anything else. I'm sure other managers have differing opinions but this strategy has served me well.
