2H slash or bash?

As the title suggests, I'm wondering if it is more effective to slash or bash with 2H weapons. Obviously, 2H axes and mauls et cetera should be used to bash, but how about 2H swords? Or polearms?

Bash for axe/mace type weapons and slash for bladed weapons.
