why retire?

my primus glad is showing a link to retire. I looked through the forums for more info, but found little guidance on the actual process and purpose. is this an unlock, or just an invitation to screw myself out of a top earner?

Ask Admiral Ackbar. :) If you don't, you have to trust me saying that retiring a gladiator will give you access to a selection of much more expensive and gifted slaves. Take your pick. Wisely.

ok, so I should get up maybe 50k before retiring? what's a good number?

There is "info" about hol slaves in almost every guide.
There is no good number to keep in bank. The more the merrier. If you have 1 glad in primus, you should then have at least 4 other glads making their way to top. I was at such stage not so long ago and had almost 100k per day of profit.
You will do fine with no money and a bit better with some money. I would priority getting a hol slave asap.
