Must Defend out of nowhere

This happens for the second or third time. After my gladiator skillfully throws away his weapon (and eventually picks it), he gets the Must Defend critical for 1-2 rounds. Example below:

Is this normal or it's a bug?

It's should not be the fumble, it's due to throwing away and picking up the weapon. I've never seen this outcome from "simple" fumbles, only where the gladiator drops the weapon. Question is, is this normal. 2 rounds of Must Defend because of something like this looks like an overkill to me.
