The "Should I Get This Slave" Thread

Seeing as people keep making new threads asking for advice on whether or not to get a slave, and what to make them, I figure why not finally make 1 thread for everyone to ask in.

Hopefully it will not only reduce clutter, but may also preemptively answer questions for people who are looking at getting a slave similar to one that's already been queried about.


Quick tips for slave selection:

- Dont get too caught up on getting the "perfect slave" as normally you will want to retire it to the Hall of Legends and gain access to a Premium Slave (HoL slave) which have rather juiced stats (then you can get picky :) )

- Try to have size and stamina over 65

- If any stats are below 55, it's probably worth giving a miss regardless of how good everything else is.

- A gladiator under 900gp is normally not worth taking

Okay, came across a gladiator for 1024 gold in my HoL, I know what you must be thinking "why would he even consider getting that when he's passed on 1100+ glads?" two reasons: 98 presence and 95 SIZE

Here's his full stats:

75 str, 66 int, 54 agility (if this was higher it'd be an instant-buy from me, it's the only thing making me nervous and ultimately why his price is so low...), 79 stam, 95 size, 98 pres, 78 chi

Should I get this gladiator for his insane size and presence or should I skip due to his really low agility? If I should get it, what would you recommend I make out of him? Need an answer by the end of today, because there is no pause on the HoL timer! Thanks!

If you get him, either a 2H Rage or 2H War would be great. I'd go with 2H Rage and see how many opponents I could kill :) He'd be a good glad for those days when the pit fight winner is determined by kills. Maybe you pass on him...but if you're having fun with it, why not try it out. If you get bored with it, you can always retire him again in a few months.

I would make that a blades rage, or a blades theatrics. Probably rage because of his int.

TBH, I would probably just hang onto the slaves you have and retire them so that you can get a HoL slave.

Hi. I have a slave in market with following stats: 79 strength, 56 int, 91 agility, 75 stamina, 84 size, 91 presence, 79 chi. price is 1054.
I'm wondering how much low int would effect if I'd make speed rage and hear opinions should I pick this one?

The price alone is outstanding (unseen for me) and the stats beside int are really great for a non HOL. You will especially have difficulties training your weapon skill, but overall such low int should not have a big impact in retiring this glad. I'd be happy seeing this slave popping up in the market.

If it's an HOL one personally I'd not pick it and wait for a more balanced one, although I've never run a glad with that low int and the other stats are pretty good. Int can still be much lower for a rage imho. It'd maybe interesting getting it.
E: Most probably HOL, not sure why I thought it might be a regular one...

I would definitely pick that one up! Theatrics would be a strong contender. Could also consider a blade or polearm warrior theatrics hybrid. I'm jealous!

Thanks Storm, I'm iffy about making a blades war after my first glad of that type, and I've never liked Polearm wars, I think (unless other comments can sway me) I'll make him into a Theatrics, won't purchase until the end of the day, to give everyone who plans on commenting time to do so :P

Hey Kuljem,

Perhaps you'd like to consider editing that comment a bit in case some inadvertently find offense. Just my 2 cents.

As for Frostee's glad - that would work well with any agility-based build. It depends on what you want to try and what you already have in your stable. If you've already got a speed theatrics, then try something new. Speed Rage? Hit 'n' Run Rage? Speed Shadow?

If you're set on defensive theatrics (the kind with shield and defense boosts), good luck to you. Unless you mean skill theatrics (entangle, signature moves) - then I'd say there are some that balance int and agi to be successful and others who emphasize mainly agi. In any case, that build is versatile enough to be many things and can always be rebuilt to something else if your first idea doesn't work.

I'd have to switch out one of my lvl 55 guys to get him...seems like he'd be a good War or Power theatrics, but I don't like his Chi being so low. But with only 552 stat points and a cost of 1140 gp, he rates as likely to have the highest luck score I've ever seen. If I had an open slot, I'd take a flyer on him. But since I'd have to retire either my lvl 55 skill theatrics or polearm war for him, I'm not so sure. Leaning towards a 'no' unless somebody can convince me he'd be great (Kreegan - you have good experience with Power theatrics...what do you think?)

Hey guys, i am looking for my second HoL, and after a few weeks, I stumbled upon this guy. I only found him interesting because of 100 size. He has low pres and chi tho.
I would really like if somebody could give advice whether to take him or not, and what to make of him?

Kuljem the size 100 is very tempting, I think if i was to pick him up i'd consider a defensive war with him, sword and shield perhaps as a trug.

Hey Kulj, I'd definitely go defensive war, he could wear some real heavy gear with size like that, and the health bonus, plus trug? He'd be quite the monster, if you want a tank, that's nearly as good as they get :P

Kuljem - I like this glad and think it would be a great addition to a stable of 5. It may not be your best, but it will be very competitive. That 100 size is very rare (only 2 others I know of) and the rest of his stats are fine for a War. If you're going to go offensive War (what I would do), I'd consider other races like Dunder, but if you decide to go defensive, then Trug and Spite are the way to go.

Kuljem - I would definitely pick him up. He will make an good warrior. He is very similar to my glad Agravaine.
I would consider either Polearm or Blades to go with the decent agility. I'm with Adoede for going offensive (which could be pure war tree or you could consider going hybrid). I wouldn't be concerned about the chi or presence - those numbers are decent for a war and they are easy to raise with equipment.

I was deciding till last seconds, and i really couldn't make up my mind, but since it's easier to build tank then offensive war, especially polearms, i decided to go with shields and stuff. :D

Depends what weapon you gonna use.
If you plan to hit first with agility weapons, then use elaar. If you expect to attack second then dunder.
Others might say differently, but that's my idea on this matter.

A 565 point slave. The balanced combo of str-int-agi-pres good enough for a theatric. Size may help wear some medium armour. Not bad to take it imo. Although there can certainly be a better one, depending on the build you may have in mind. An expert advice will help much.

hey there Zinzan. Sry for replying a bit late. I think you could get better, in terms of stats. If you want to get a rage, both strength and chi should be high. In any case, it is always better to start with a glad with good size, 70+ because that will make it easier for you to stay in the fight (rages lost steam when they get to low health)

I don't know. I remember when I had normal slaves I always waited until they they costed about +-950 and then look their stats. Size above 70 always, str or agi above average and others not too low(like 60 or whatever). I forgot exact numbers.
That's about it. Look at guides too(for wars for example).

For non-HoL i've used the rules:
1. Stamina 60+, Presence 60+. Also, i prefer Intellect 60+ to have some learning abilities.
2. Some pairs of stats above 70. For example, Agi 70+ and Prs 70+. Or Stm 70+ and Str 70+. The pair defines a choice of speciality.
3. High Size is good for everything, but not necessary. // Some builds, like speed-theatric and speed-rage, doesn't need nor tons of health, nor high weight on their gear.

Now i would add the Chi 60+ condition, but i do not use non-HoL now...

And yes, for me the main goal was to reach the retirement. And i don't know what is Your goal...

Honestly, if i want to retire fast, I make a speed rage with blades; look for 70+ int and agi and care little for much else; max out mainly agi and secondarily presence using gear and achievement slots; run their strategies very aggressively; and challenge people I'm well suited to beat. That glad will have no problem retiring as soon as they hit 1000 fights.

If you're new, though, you can experiment with the other types of builds and should have little problem getting any glad to retirement. This might take a little longer for some builds, but it will teach you a lot about what sorts of things work and what you like your glads to do.

The slave looks decent. I would make a rage out of it, because it has good strenght, agility and chi (int feels a bit wasted on rage, but it is still good for activated skills). It has low presence to be a theatric (but not impossible) and not enough size to be a war.
If you have acces to shadow and/or slayer they are viable options. A bit low presence, but int agi and chi is what both need. And since strenght and agility are almost the same both strenght and speed builds would be viable.

Anything above 560 is good. Highest that I'm aware of is Ahhnold, at 592.

570 and up is rather uncommon. Just remember that luck is an unknown value that also affects price. usually, if a glad is more than 1120gp, you've got a pretty serious slave :)

The very best HOL slave I've ever heard of is Ahhhnold with an insane 591 (592?) base stat points. The second and third best I've ever heard of are 579 and 575. However, I've seen around three thousand HOL slaves and my best ever is 571 stat points. Anything over 560 is very solid - though it really depends on how those stats are distributed too. Seraph Zodak, for instance, only had 539 base stat points - but he had 100 agility - which is why I took him anyway. Among my glads in blood gods, I have one in the 530's, one in the 540's, a bunch in the 550's, a bunch in the 560's, and some in the 570's. But interestingly, my best performing glads are not the ones with the most stat points. Consider that :p

The thing is, I went to "Sell slave" section and calculated attributes of all my slaves and turns out one of my glads has 576 total points. I was like, daaaaaayum. I was smart back then. xD
In case anyone wants to check out my bragging, he is called Holos Ii :D hahaha
BUT, another thing actually hit me in the head. One of my glads has a total of 596 (woot?), and I was wondering, was he bought like that, or does it take into account that I also increased couple of his attributes with training points, since I have 100/100 in one of trees?
Because if he was bought with such stats, then I guess I have the best HOL slave. :D

When we say base stat points, we mean stat points before any stat trains. So Ahhnold with stat trains is at something like 646 stat points...but his BASE stat points are 592.

and I forgot to do the thing where you buy the 1st stat rank with trophies and train the rest :'( (you get an extra rank that way as training up seems ot miss a rank....) It's an incredibly low priority bug that Nate is yet to fix AFAIK

Keep in mind, that some glads have more stat points than other glads of the same gold value, which indicated having less luck, or more size. General rule of thumb is that if a glad is over 1120gp, and you like the stat range, get it :)

He is very balanced. It's really up to you if you want to take him and what to make of him.

I personally would pass, but that's just me. When I get to pick premium slaves, I like to see cost higher and vital stat above 90 (considering other stats are good too).

He's not bad to-be-retired material, just don't expect extraordinary performance. Certainly slower and dumber than the healthy minimum but that can be fixed with equipment.

Zinzan, there is no methods to have very high performance having "bad stats". And a "good stats" for non-HOL are about 70 in my opinion. But.
The "high performance" depending on Your goals, as already suggested by Kreegan.

In global, there's no question like "Should I get this slave?", but the correct question sounds like "What i need to move _this_ slave into Retirement/Primus/Blood_Games ?" (and so on).
So.
1. Choose the target area.
2. Examine statistic for this area. // For example, a 2H War will be hard to reach Primus today, but this task still solvable even if You're have "bad stats".
3. Implement Your choices.

4. Get a result and return to 1.

But it depends on what the build You're planning to try. He looks good for heavy armed & heavy armored builds.

Really. There are four Power Theatrics in the Top 10 of Blood Goods in the last season.

So. It's looks like a "nice" idea to build exactly Power Theatrics. But. I suggest to build a War with this one. Polearm or Dual-[Heavy]-Swords.
It will be hard to find right strategy for him. But it's a good quest. And ... Wars are more adoptable than Theatrics.

But if You like an "easy" ways. then forget what i said.

What is the most expensive slave you've seen so far? Looks like hall of legends has got lots of new members so I guess many stable managers have been doing some research with new slaves. Most expensive I've seen is costing 1224 with stats 80-85-96-97-97-75-75. Still no idea is this how good slave.

Most expensive I've seen is 93 100 82 97 83 92 67 1229 gp. I'll probably try it as a trixter.

I've spent a ton of trophies scanning the slave market and for the most part the new HOL slaves are in the 1100-1199 gp range. Very occasionally I see one in the 1200 gp range (~3% of glads - 1 out of 30 or so) and those guys are typically all very comparable. Meaning the difference between 1205 gp slave vs. 1229 gp slave is not that big.

For instance, this guy cost 1206 gp: 85 82 93 99 87 83 80 - pretty dang good if you ask me.

Even some in the <1200 gp range are really solid - I took this guy too:

77 75 100 85 97 73 89 1176 gp Maybe not quite in the elite, but I was intrigued by his agility and size combo.

Anybody else have more data for us to munch?

I've too been spending trophies a lot during last hour to slave searching. So far about 200 or more slave market refreshes and that previous slave I posted is still the most expensive I've seen (and I didn't take it %&@$). I pretty much agree with all you posted. So far I've seen about 5-6 slaves that cost over 1200.

When i Buy a Gladiator i usually wait for the gold cost. 1040 /1080 none premium Gladiators are usually able to hit 80 to 90 in all stats (once upgraded) and a good size of 70+

Don't think i have had a premium Gladiator before but i know if i did i would make sure it come around the cost of 1180 / 1200 at least. (that's my advice)

For regular glads anything is fine :D even 40 size... eventually you will get him to retirement.
For premium slaves, get one with at least 1200 with all stats over 89, except you're going for some extreme build. You can get away with extreme builds, but thats more for experienced players.

With overall good stats you can change your skills/builds without sucking :D imagine a war glad... so many builds with many different stats needed for each one.

Its been weeks now ive been sitting with no gladiator, trying to get a decent first premium and only twice did I even see one that reached 1200gp. And they had some low stas in the 70's still. Do I just have over high expectations?

Could just be your expectations. Personally I only touch 1180+ slaves for premium... will only dip lower if they have a really interesting stat spread. The general rule of thumb I follow is around 610-ish or higher for total stat sum, as well as 90+ in an offensive stat (str/agi). Certain stats being lower like in the 70s isn't an issue depending on the glad type. For ex. Rage's are fine with lower Int, a defensive glad can be fine with lower Pres, and a defensive shadow/trixter can be fine with lower Strength. Race can also make up for a lower stat, for ex. going Urk as a rage to make up for lower stamina. Would also never take a premium glad with < 80 size/stamina though.

Well... as you know Ive been waiting on getting my first premium slave, and being pretty picky. Highest I've gotten so far was today, coming in at 1191 gold:

Really wanted to try trixter but thinking the low pres and chi wouldnt work well

never pick a premium slave with stats under 80. Have some with 90-100 across the board and 69 chi ....... well... you will regret it in the end :(
Better substitute 5 point in the main stat and take 20 in some sidestats. IF you will find one that suits you.

Seems a moot point lol... I've been trying every day since February and havent gotten anything great.... heck only got above 1200 (barely) 3 times and they all had a stat below 75.

I'd double check your expectations when it comes to recruitment I think. Ultimately it comes down to how you build your gladiator that makes it successful or not. There are gladiators from pre-buffed-stat era that consistently make top 10-top 20 in Blood Gods each season. I've definitely had "sub par" glads that surprised me with their performance given a few tweaks in their gear/strats

Follwing the advice given in the replies earlier... including your own Bloodbath. 1180+ for premium with about a 610+ or so total stat line and no size/stam below 80. Really nothing below 80 and at least one offensive stat 90+.

Yeah I feel that. I mean I look for that 1180+/around 610 stats as a personal thing. Since I already have a stable of premium slaves competing in Blood Gods so any new slave I get I want to be a major competitor. But in the end, having a premium slave and working it up to Primus/BG is more fun than doing nothing. I've wasted so many premium slaves on Slayer build experiments lol. Anyways, feel free to message me in-game with any slaves you see that might be viable and I'll give you my 2 cents. Hope your slave market luck turns around!

I too burned through my premium slaves for wild slayer builds xD
It all depends on your goal. If you want a competitive glad that is capable to fight in the top 10, than you can take any glad with 80 in each stat (many "purple" gear glad reach the top 10).
But if you want a real shot at Nr.1 than you should be really picky! And always consider this! You cant get experience without a glad allready fighting in full orange gear in Blood Gods.
Get one "semi" good premium slave that compliments your build ( for example my theatric has all main stats agi,stam,pres over 95, but 69 in Int....) he works well for his build, but I feel the lack of int in his stats almost every fight.... :( he is good...but great.

Stil never skip SIZE! especially if your glad wears medium or heavy armor.

Thank you both for the additional advice... here is a question: Right now I have no gladiators. I have a premium slave to buy that I have been hunting for a while. If I refresh the slave market, it gives me all normal gladiators. If I were to purchase one or more of those normal gladiators (in order to get some guys to play with now) will I still go back to the premium slaves offered the next day?

After the refresh you will stil have new premium slaves to chose from. I think the game displays it as a "normal" slave even if its premium, just change to blacksmith and back to the slave market and you will see the same stats on your "normal" slaves but with the premium label.
In better words, if you have a premium slave in the market you are forced to get him first before you can get normal slaves again. At least that was the case on my last 5 slaves.

After you got your first "Testing" premium slave (I cycled through 2-4 premium slaves for each Glad I have now in Blood gods before commiting to the final ones) take all the normal slaves with any stats and playtest them till retirement. Even if you are an all rage guy, make your normal slaves every other class so you have first hand experience for future fine tuned strats ;) and dont look at your win/lose ratio on your normal slaves.

After you have 3-4 premium slaves fighting, you can get really picky with your 5th slave. You can easily burn through 2000 trophies without any 1200 slaves :(

Edit (I checked my theatric yesterday, now i know why he sucks so bad vs shadows... he actually has Int at 67 and Chi at 69..:eek: ) so you can get at least ones a year a top 3 spot with such abyssmal stats.

And please tell us if you picked your glad, its always fun to watch young glads climb up the ladder.

The stam and size are nice on it for sure, but presence being high isn't that exciting since there is an abundance of pres on a lot of pieces of gear. If the Pres and Agi were switched this would be nice but I think it's not high tier. Regarding the low agi/int, just remember not every stat can be very high of course, you only need stats relevant to the type of glad you want to build. For ex. one of my latest glads I have climbing, Zhevron is 92-80-97-90-87-74-82 (602) which could be higher overall total but is still effective due to stat spread.

You could for sure take this slave to Blood Gods and compete though.

Well you can work with him pretty good. High Sta and good Size almost enough to fully wear medium armor without penalty.

My first impression would be a "theatric" with almost any build, maybe a bit weak for the classic "counter attack build".
Or a good old trixster build!
Maybe a heavy armor slayer or a energy drain shadow, both classes would work fine and the low chi wont cripple them to much.

A war glad could also work, but its a bit of a stretch with the size stat.

I personally like the idea of an energy drain shadow or even trixter, but like Aphexii said, this slave can do a lot of different things outside of War with the size issue.

you have to unlock those three classes in the "stable upgrade" where you upgrade all other things under "Staff", just scroll down and you see a 1999 trophie wall behind each class :D
The good news are, you dont really need all three unlocked to use one class to it fullest potential! As of right now no hybrid Slayer/Shadow/Trixster got anywhere near the top 10....just buy one and enjoy :D
