There has been some confusion on how this works so I thought I might try and clear things up.
Challenging a gladiator is completely risk free to you regarding your gold.
If you win, you take gold from your OPPONENT'S master in addition to the normal cut of the fight purse from the arena.
If you lose, you get your normal cut from the fight purse, but you DO NOT give any of your gold to the opponent's master. For crushing your challenge attempt the other gladiator gets extra gold from the ARENA as a bonus.
Hope that clears things up. As you can see there is very little reason not to always be challenging gladiators.
