how does silver works?

i dont get it my gold keeps increasing but every time i sell something sometimes Silver increases but others it decrease. Just now i sold a piece of armor and i had 58 silver or something but when i sold the armor i ended up whit more gold but 18 Silver.
Does Silver has a cap were it turns into gold like WoW? or whats the matter?

silver is fractional gold. 100 silver = 1 gold.

i don't see any sense in silver. for what is it good? it is such a small amount. it could be negated, because it's worthless.
