Defense Stat

I have searched the forums and couldn't find anything on this...
What does the defense stat do?
I have a 6 armor arm guard with 2 defense and was wondering if it was better than one with 11 armor.

The more defense you have, the more chance there is that opponent attacks fail...

The more armor you have, the less damage you take from successful hits from the opponent that are located on the body part covered by that armor element.

Both are useful, so the choice is yours... But a +2 defense is not much so I would rather take the 11 armor in that case.
